What we do:
Chocolate for Heroes is a Connecticut-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that brings awareness and improves the lives of veterans through chocolate, equine-assisted therapy, and SMILES!
We bring chocolate and our miniature therapy horses, Bella and Daisy, to veterans at local VA hospitals and VA events. We also provide veterans with the opportunity to work with Bella and Daisy at our barn. We hope to eventually expand outside of the state.
Chocolate for Heroes was founded in 2015 when CEO Maria Hughes, the owner of a chocolate company and two miniature horses, saw an opportunity to thank and brighten the days of our country’s heroes.
Hughes saw veterans’ lives up close as three members of her immediate family are veterans. One fought in World War II in the D-Day invasion and two fought in the Vietnam War, one in the Army on land and one in the Navy on the USS America aircraft carrier off the coast of Vietnam.
We work to put smiles on the faces of veterans, the brave men and women who have sacrificed so much for our freedom. Many veterans struggle with mental and physical challenges upon returning home. We bring happiness to the veterans and their taste buds with delicious chocolate and heal their hearts with the calming, emotional, and spiritual connection our miniature therapy horses, Bella and Daisy, evoke just by their presence. The goal of Chocolate for Heroes is to put smiles on their faces, sweeten their day, and see them experience the most fascinating, life-changing transformations from these spectacular little horses.
